Foundation Training for Union Coordinators and District Managers

bbbBRAC Community Empowerment Programme (CEP) and The Hunger Project-Bangladesh (THP) in progress a two-year partnership project (February 2014 – December 2015) with a view to strengthen Union Parshads for transparent, accountable and inclusive governance at the local level in order to accelerate the achievement of the MDGs.

The project going to implemented in 14 Upazilas across 3 Divisions, 4 Districts and comprising 61 Unions (12 Unions of Kishoreganj Districts of Dhaka Division; 16 Unions of Bagerhat District of Sylhet Division; 33 Unions of Sunamganj & Habiganj Districts of Sylhet Division).

2 foundation training courses held for Union Coordinators and District Managers of the Hunger Project.

Training 1 held on 10-12 March 2014 at Padakhep Training Centre, Adhabor, Mohammadpur. 22 participants participated the foundation training where female were 4 and male 18. Among 22 participants 18 were Union Coordinators, 2 Area Coordinators and 2 Regional Coordinators.

Nasima Akhter Joly, Project Director, Mr. Mostaque Ahmed, Manager, CEP, Brac and The Hunger Project staff Jamirul Islam, Masudur Rahman Ranju, Jayanta Kor, Tuhin Afsari, Uttam Dutta and Khairul Bashar took part as facilitator.

Training 2 held on 17-19 March 2014 at Padakhep Training Centre, Adhabor, Mohammadpur. 32 participants took part in the foundation training where female were 3 and male 29. Among 32 participants 28 were Union Coordinators, 1 Accounts Officer cum Data entry Officer and 3 District Manager.

Nasima Akhter Joly, Project Director and The Hunger Project staff Jamirul Islam, Tuhin Afsari, Tanuja Kamal and Shukhamoy contributed as facilitator.

The Training program held with a view to create a common understanding on working strategy, management structure, staff roles and responsibility by which participants can be effective to run the project efficiently.

Main discussant points were Crisis of local governance; Good Governance and Role of UP; Philosophy & Working strategy of The Hunger Project & Brac to improve local governance; Goal, Outcome, Activities of the project; Project monitoring; Project documentation

Participants had the opportunity to practice `Vision, Commitment and Action’ Workshop and Citizens workshop. They are going to use these tools to inspire, empower local community, UP members to take own responsibility to improve their life, institutions through individual and collective initiative. More importantly participants went through the Roles, Responsibility and Activities of UP. They got trained to guide UP to do 5 year planning policies and techniques.
